For years freelance writers have relied on traditional methods of finding work like the printed Writer’s Market or writers magazines that while being a great source of inspiration on how to finish your novel do not offer the number of resources every writer needs to find well-paying jobs as a serious freelancer. But now the internet is bursting with great resources some dedicated to jobs and some to articles about writing.
Writing-World.com
Writing-World.com is a site dedicated to writer education. It lists dozens of articles on writing for newspapers, deciding whether or not to write full time and alternatives to query letters.
They have sections about writing certain genres like mystery and sci-fi as well as writing creative non-fiction and screenwriting. They also have a monthly e-mail newsletter which features articles published on the site over the previous month.
Articles on Freelance Writing
Besides being on freelance writing sites articles about freelance writing are all over the internet. In an article on ehow.com entitled “How to Become a Freelance Writer” using websites as job search tools is the recommended step five.
Another site that features helpful articles is CoolStuff4Writers.com which focuses mainly on novel writing but also hosts a monthly contest in which readers are challenged to write short 150 word stories based on a topic that is submitted by readers and chosen by the editor every month.
Even with the benefits of the internet writer Mridu Kuhllar warns potential freelancers not to “Start dreaming of life filled with grandeur…you’ll have to reply to e-mails within a 24-hour period like a reliable person,” in her article “Freelance Writing” on the blog Quick Overview.
Finding Jobs in Freelance Writing
There are several places on the web to find jobs freelancing. One of the biggest is Freelance Writing Jobs which lists jobs found around the internet every day. The site is in blog form and most days it publishes multiple posts filled with resources.
Another way freelancers just starting out can find work and decide what areas they like to write best is professional blogging. Sites like Today.com and The Examiner pay users for posts and articles on specific topics. The Today.com blog network allows users to set up a blog similar to Wordpress and pays per article and per click as well as making a special list of projects editors are looking for available to their writers.
In an article published at the Freelance Writing Jobs site on Friday August 29th, 2008 writer Deborah Ng warns against writers “Putting all your eggs in one basket” as one of the “Top Ten Bad Habits” writers need to break. “I still see freelancers counting on one website to pay the bills,” says Ng. She also says this is a bad idea because some sites have either shut down completely or have had to change how much they pay to keep the sites up.
